Description

A quick overview of the basic anatomy of a pseudodragon.

  • 1: One of the most recognizable features of pseudodragons are their feathery crests. Crest style, shape, size, texture, and color all varies quite a bit, but the principle is always the same. The crest sweeps back from the brow, covers the back of the head, and carries down to the jawline. The line of feathers may or may not show breaks between the head-section and jaw-sections. The jaw-crest (sometimes called a beard, but not to be mistaken for the sexually-dimorphic beard of males) may be connected as a single unit from jaw to jaw, or may be two separate pieces individually on each jaw.
  • 2: From the crest comes the mane; a stretch of particularly downy feathers originating from the crest, and going down the neck. Length varies, with neck-only to full dorsal manes being possible and not uncommon.
  • 3: Sexual dimorphism is quite apparent in this species. While females are larger on average, male pseudodragons develop a beard of feathers which, like the crest, is relaxed when content, flattened when frightened, and extended when excited.
  • 4: Distinguishing facial anatomy includes the forked tongue, which is typically shades of pink to violet, and the external ears. The shape of the ears differs across the species, but the function and mobility are about the same.
  • 5: All pseudodragons have a set of specialized ventral scales, being much larger and more broad than those covering the body. It is believed that this is to protect the delicate underside of pseudodragons, allowing them to rest and move along rough surfaces without harm.
  • 6: Pseudodragons are equipped with short, sharp nails that are useful for climbing, digging, traction, and as a last resort for defense.
  • 7: Pseudodragons generally walk with their heel lifted off of the ground, but the entire front foot planted on the ground. This, along with the hind limbs being overall longer, gives the pseudodragon an arched look while ambulating.
  • 8: Many lizards have stiff tails, but pseudodragons do not fall into this. In fact the tail is quite fluid in movement, and it is very common to find pseudodragons with kinks in their tail-tips.
